Layout Update

It is sadly time for Sutterton to be retired in its present form as it has proved increasingly difficult of late to maintain the track, stock and wiring. The track has been completely relaid and required. Testing will begin shortly so that the layout can return to the show circuit in its new guise. Thoughts are being given to alternative station and building options, enabling the modelling of non-UK outline donated stock.”

A Pre-grouping Great Northern Railway through station by John Andrews

The following description is based on notes left by John Andrews

Sutterton is based on Algakirk and Sutterton, the second station between Spalding and Boston, on what was the G.N. Lincolnshire loop line. It ran from Peterborough via Boston and Lincoln to Doncaster.

The layout is in the form of a straight front (the viewing side) of 20 feet, a similar ten tracked fiddleyard at the rear with curves of minimum radius 4 feet to join them up.

The period modelled is the latter part of the Great Northern period just before grouping in 1923. A glance at the track plan will show that Sutterton is a most suitable station to model. There are adequate facilities for goods traffic on both sides of the through  running lines. The track plan is reasonably compact and there are lengthy refuge sidings in both directions for goods trains whilst passengers go by. All access to the sidings is from trailing points and shunting can take place without fouling the running lines.

The stock varies from fast excursion trains to local stopping trains and lengthy goods workings. All the locos are kit built and are in the Great Northern green livery except for one, which is in 1914-1918 wartime grey.

The layout was featured in British Railway Modelling magazine in March 2001,by Anglia Television in 2002, and has won awards at ExpoEM. It was bequeathed by John in 2009 and the stock was purchased from his estate a few months later.
