Amberdale

This is a club layout.

Location

Amberdale is a single line secondary route through the Peak District of north Derbyshire in the last 1950's to early 1960's. Motive power for this period is steam with early green diesels.

Build History

Originally built to a brief from BRM and serialised by them, it was intended to fit into a 10 feet by 8 feet shed - hence the name of the series 'The Layout in the Shed'. The intention behind the layout was to demonstrate various methods of scenery construction and detailing.

The shed which featured along with the layout at many exhibitions including Warley and Alexandra Palace, now resides in a field in the south country, making a living as a very upmarket horse shelter!

Since then, the layout has been extended to make for more interesting running and some pictures are included in the gallery below.

Booking Information

Amberdale depicts a single through line with station and small goods yard built by the Midland Railway somewhere in the north Derbyshire peak distict. The period depicted is set between the mid 1950's and 1960's, so mainly steam with early diesel traction is seen. It is not based on an actual location but includes features that are common to that area. Traffic is mainly coal and local passenger trains. When engineering work closes the midland main line to Manchester diverted expresses are seen passing through.  Semaphore signals together with working station and road lighting are included. The layout is DC controlled but wiring allows for DCC.

Layout size is - 14' x 8'.  We would require space for a table alongside or along the rear of the layout.  We are happy to be at the end of a row as the layout has scenery along both ends.
